A message from ASU President Crow: ASU Spring 2021 Commencement Update

March 29, 2021

Dear ASU community:

More than 19,000 Arizona State University undergraduate and graduate students are preparing to graduate this year, and we are pleased to share that our spring 2021 graduation ceremonies on May 3 will be held virtually and in person.

The university-wide presentation of degree candidates and conferral of degrees will be virtual, premiering on the morning of May 3. Graduates and their families will be able to celebrate commencement from anywhere in the world anytime after the premiere of the ceremony, increasing the opportunity for participation, particularly for out-of-state and international students and their families.

In-person celebrations for graduates will occur at the individual college level, hosted by academic deans. Events associated with each college will include the hooding of doctoral candidates and many smaller innovative events. For example, in addition to hooding doctoral candidates in person, the College of Health Solutions is exploring an outdoor procession for master’s degree and undergraduate students. These events would be limited to graduates only. Final plans will be determined at the college level and announced in the coming days. We have a creative and innovative culture at ASU, so I look forward to seeing what ideas and activities emerge.

In addition to virtual and in-person graduation activities, the university will offer a scheduled professional photo opportunity on all campuses and will provide social media graphics, filters, Zoom backgrounds, GIFs and more for all graduates.

We hope you look forward to recognizing the incredible achievements of our students who did everything we ask of our graduates under extraordinary circumstances and with unforeseen challenges due to the pandemic.
