ASU COVID-19 Update: March 18, 2020
On Monday, Arizona State University continued its rapid response to COVID-19 by transitioning to online courses for the remainder of the spring semester. In short order, our university community came together with energy, resolve and creativity to support the health, safety and learning of our students. There are many challenges in turning a ship as complex as ASU and I appreciate the teamwork, patience and cooperation I’ve witnessed as we all work together to navigate this unprecedented situation.
The scope of our assignment has included the following:
- Moving roughly 55,000 on-campus students successfully to our digital learning platforms, which already serve tens of thousands of daily online learners from 170 countries.
- Making 2,200 additional laptop computers and hundreds of portable Wi-Fi hotspots available to university community members with need.
- Providing expanded telehealth services to students, including counseling.
- Expanding our online academic advising support.
- Managing a broad spectrum of intricate living and learning needs for thousands of students residing in and around our residence halls.
- Continuing classes for all of our K-12 charter school students without interruption.
- Communicating developments and available resources to ASU students and their families through every possible asset.
- Supporting the teaching and discovery operations of our faculty and researchers, including those working to combat COVID-19.
- Transitioning corporate internships to virtual mode so our students can retain their experience.
As the landscape around COVID-19 and our community continues to evolve, we will continue to navigate this uncharted territory guided by our mission and our commitment to service.
As a husband, father and Arizonan, I recognize the questions and concerns created by the unpredictability of current events. But please know that ASU is undeterred and laser-focused on helping to get through this together.
