ASU Making Plans to Refurbish Campus Buildings

Many of Arizona State University's aging buildings will soon receive a long-overdue fix-up.

The Legislature in June approved $1 billion for building renewal and new construction at the state's three public universities, though nearly half will be spent on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. The Arizona Board of Regents is giving roughly $200 million to ASU.

ASU's School of Construction will get up to $32 million for a new building to house its growing enrollment.

The construction school's new home will meet the highest "green" building standards, James Ernzen, director of the school, has said. Construction professors will use the building to show students first-hand what earth-friendly structures look like and how they work.

University officials are still figuring out precisely which structures on the main campus in Tempe they want to spend their remaining $170 million in maintenance cash.

On July 21, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Channel 8/KAET-TV and the KBAQ Production Studio will officially relocate to a new 223,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility on the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus. The new leading edge, six-story facility, which has been underway for over a year, will house classrooms, newsrooms, computer labs, production studios, and administrative offices.

ASU's Downtown Building Nearly Done

Workers are finishing a signature building on Arizona State University's downtown Phoenix campus.

The $71 million future home for the journalism school and Channel 8 is a bronze building with crisp lines, loft-like spaces and cutting-edge classroom details, said Richard Stanley, a senior vice president and university planner.

"We wanted to put in place the notion that this was for an urban campus," Stanley said. "It's not just another office building."

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication will move from Tempe to downtown Phoenix this summer, in time for the fall term. The school will share the six-story, 223,000-square-foot building with the public television station and KBAQ, a classical music station.

ASU'S Journalism School Picked for ABC Bureau

ABC News has formed a partnership with Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and four other top U.S. journalism schools to help train and mentor students.

ABC plans to open a multimedia bureau at ASU in September that will give students the opportunity to produce content for ABC News' various digital and broadcast platforms, including “Good Morning America,” “World News with Charles Gibson,” and “Nightline.”
