New Elementary With Ties To ASU Opens

First- and second-graders practiced pronunciation. Third- and fourth-graders learned basic Spanish while learning their classmates' names. Fifth- and sixth-graders discovered their teachers' backgrounds.

Monday was the first day of school for the 230 kindergarten to sixth-graders at Polytechnic Elementary School in Mesa. The nonprofit charter school, managed by University Public Schools Inc., is affiliated with Arizona State University. It's been in the planning stages since ASU President Michael Crow envisioned it in 2002.

The school promises innovative, team teaching, individualized learning for every student and new teaching styles, implemented with the help of mentor teachers and ASU graduate students, said Principal Donna Bullock.

On July 21, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Channel 8/KAET-TV and the KBAQ Production Studio will officially relocate to a new 223,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility on the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus. The new leading edge, six-story facility, which has been underway for over a year, will house classrooms, newsrooms, computer labs, production studios, and administrative offices.

ASU Research Magazine was recently named the best university research magazine in the United States by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This major recognition is the pinnacle of 28 honors that ASU Research Publications has received this year alone for its outstanding work in communicating ASU's discovery efforts in compelling and innovative ways.

Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy recently published a report entitled “Megapolitan- Arizona’s Sun Corridor.” The report focuses on the convergence of Arizona’s major population centers into one vast urban area and the challenges and opportunities resulting from this trend.

Since 1994, the ASU Parents Association has recognized teaching excellence through its Professor of the Year Award. Each year, the Association asked students, staff and other faculty to nominate ASU professors who “best exemplify a passion for teaching and who excel in both undergraduate teaching and in their area of research and/or creative activity.” Winners are selected by a committee of parents, students, faculty, and staff, and the winner receives a cash award of $10,000, funding for an undergraduate research assistant, and a lifelong designation as a Parents Association Professor.

Last week’s podcast featured remarks by ASU President Michael Crow related to the economic stimulus plan that is currently being proposed by Arizona State University and its two sister universities. Dr. Dennis Hoffman, university economist and director of the L. William Seidman Research Institute in the W. P. Carey School of Business, has been involved in the plan’s development and recently presented the plan to the Arizona Board of Regents. He joins us today to offer additional context for the plan and its critical implications for the state of Arizona.
