Answering Student Concerns

Date:
March 31, 2007

Last week, I had an opportunity to sit down with students at ASU's Tempe and West campuses as part of Student Office Hours and several issues were raised that I wanted to mention here.

A student at the Tempe campus was concerned with the rumored discontinuation of tutoring in the residence halls. I'm glad to clarify that there are no plans to end this service. The confusion seems to stem from the decision to remove the "live in" requirement for program tutors in order to attract additional qualified tutors who live off campus. The starting wage for tutors has recently been increased to $9.45/hour for the same reason. Tutors play an important role in ASU's living and learning communities and their contributions to student success are appreciated.

Students on both campuses discussed parking and transportation services for students with disabilities, more specifically, intra-campus access issues. In response to their inquiries, a task force of staff and student representatives from all four campuses is being assembled and will meet soon to address these topics. Students, faculty and staff with input for the task force are welcome to contact Educational Development or the Dean of Student Affairs.

The issue of university-wide athletic ticket availability and distribution was raised at the West campus and ICA Ticket Operations assures me that discussions are currently underway with representatives and student groups at each campus to identify and implement some solutions. I look forward to sharing more details about these plans in the coming weeks.

As you might imagine, tuition and parking come up frequently in Student Office Hours. I appreciate the chance to listen and explain the university's rationale and plans on both subjects, even though it isn't always what people want to hear. The complex growth and economic factors that drive both topics are realities for our university, and I encourage students to learn more about our efforts within these contexts. I also welcome specific suggestions about alternate courses of action that can yield the outcomes needed to ensure student success and advance ASU on all fronts. If you have ideas, please feel free to send them my way.
