Research Matters Part I
Research universities are the main source of the innovation and discovery that drives our global economy and produces a myriad of advancements in our standard of living. ASU is one such university working to support the use-inspired research of its students and faculty and to elevate the role, progress and understanding of research in higher education.
This podcast is the first in a four-part series dedicated to discussing the multifaceted aspects of research at ASU, including its purpose, funding, relevance and goals.
In this segment, Rick Shangraw, vice president of Research and Economic Affairs, talks about why university research is necessary, and how it benefits students, the economy and society.

ASU to remain open
Arizona State University, which has nearly 20,000 students attending summer classes and programs, more than 10,000 staff and students involved in research supported by a wide range of funding sources, and 70,000 students arriving in 6 weeks for the fall semester will remain open for service during this period of financial decisions by our partner, the State of Arizona.
More than 75 percent of ASU operating revenues come from sources other than the state of Arizona. Specific tuition driven and research driven revenues fund our summer operations. As a result we will focus our attention relative to state funding interruptions on our planning for the fall semester.
A state government shutdown lasting through the opening of the fall semester on Aug. 24 would impact staffing and program availability significantly. The exact impact and the ability of the university to operate normally will be evaluated on a weekly basis moving forward.
In the interim all assignments and work of the university will move forward.

President Crow at GPEC/3TV town hall
Last month, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Channel 3 KTVK co-sponsored a televised Convening the Community Town Hall titled "Rebuilding Arizona's Economy." The forum included a panel of government, community and business leaders and covered a wide range of topics including the state budget, energy, education, leadership and other factors that stand to have a major impact on the future of Arizona. ASU President Michael Crow participated on the panel and discussed how the university is actively engaged in advancing the Arizona economy, as well as the effects of the state's current economic downturn.
This podcast features excerpts from the Town Hall highlighting President Crow's responses to questions posed by Channel 3's Scott Pasmore.
